I have a unique perspective in this world as a therapist who is also a frontline worker, married to a first responder, from a military family, and provided emergency psychiatric evaluations from a patrol car for over 7 years. When I say I understand, this is not a statement derived from research or instruction, but rather from lived experience and helping others who have served.
I understand.
Shift work is a world of its own and can be difficult to understand by family members or friends. There is also the concept of chain of command and respect for the culture in which you function, which sometimes does not match the current private sector culture. The language is different, the humor can be dark, and the trauma can linger.
I understand.
I have an appreciation for those who choose to serve in the first responder, military, and frontline worker roles. To me, you are extended family that need someone who understands and can help you have a safe place to heal and connect with your loved ones.
I understand.
